AARHUS THEATRE

The regional theatre in eastern Jutland was built in the late 1890’s on the initiative of devoted theatregoers in Aarhus. The building, which is an architectural gem in the Jugen style, was inaugurated on the 15th of September 1900 and has been classed as a protected building since 1990. The theatre is preserved in its original splendour and is a cultural focus in the centre of Denmark’s second largest city.

Aarhus Teater is designed by Hack Kampmann, an architect who was the originator of several of the most prominent buildings in Aarhus - for instance Marselisborg Slot (castle), Toldboden (customs-house), Erhvervsarkivet (trade archives) and Aarhus Katedralskole (secondary school).
The Interior decoration is by the artist Karl Hansen Reistrup while Professor Hans Tegner created the Holberg figures in the frieze on the theatre’s facade.

It took 13 years before the theatre received its first subsidy. These days it is mainly the Ministry of Culture that fund the wages for both the permanent staff as well as for the large number of temporary workers who are employed in front of and behind the scenes. The funding also covers in house productions on 5 stages under the same roof: Store Scene (700 seats), Scala (250), Studio (100), Stiklingen (100) and Cabaretscenen (80) in Scala-Foyer.

Aarhus Teater is by law obliged to assemble a versatile repertoire of classic and new dramas with special emphasis on Danish drama. The artistic and economic responsibility lies in the hands of the theatre director who is employed by a board, which consists of local politicians as well as employees from the theatre.

The permanent staff of more than 20 actors at Aarhus Teater is one of the largest ensembles in the country. The theatre has its own permanent workshops for carpenters, painters, and tailors and also prop production. The lighting and the sound departments are equipped for productions of very high quality.

Aarhus Teater has always educated actors but it wasn’t until 1966 that an independent drama school was started. Each year 8 students are admitted to 4-year course of studies.
The school activity is essential in maintaining Aarhus Teater as a cultural focus in mid-Jutland and has ”produced” a number of nationally known actors.
Furthermore there is a playwright education connected to Aarhus Teater.
